While in Kindergarten at St. Elizabeth School, Jon is asked to write a paper about the political implications of mid-1970’s South American guerilla warfare and its effect on global food supply and the great space race. Being a research extraordinaire but a spelling amateur (rest assured know longer the case), Jon builds a time machine from duct tape and sticks, all elements he finds in the backyard. Well actually the duct tape he finds in the garage next to some old paint cans and fishing lures, but that’s in close proximity to the backyard so the earlier description still works. Anyway, back to the whole spelling thing, Jon time-searches the words “Gorilla Warfare Year 1976.” What ensued was quite the unpleasant experience.

Okay, that’s a lie. We actually drew our name from the guerilla marketing that first inspired our creativity. Simply using guerilla was way too boring, plus there was something interesting about the strong nature of the savage Gorilla. The number, well, we started in the 7th month of 2006.

Mid ’70s. Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A young Joe Sullivan, one to never settle for the mundane, decides that he wants a new pet. Not a lizard or dog or fish or hamster, but a nose-picking, chest-pounding Gorilla. He concocts a caper to lure one of these large primates from a zoo, using a trail of 76 bananas. The plan fails miserably.

Yep, we made that up. Our name is actually a play on “guerilla marketing” – not-so-regular solutions to regular marketing challenges. And the 76. Well, it comes from the 7th month of 2006 – that’s when we first decided to take a stab at establishing our own independence.

After a brief phone interview and a one-time payment of $99.99, Gorilla 76 is what Brand Name Solutions said to be our best fit.

We jest. We actually wanted to somehow link back to the idea of non-traditional work, or guerilla marketing. We opted for the homonym. As for the number, we started in July of 2006.

It’s a little known fact that when our great nation was founded in 1776, a unanimous vote supported the Gorilla as our national animal. Unfortunately, President Washington said he’d pass on the job unless they went with the yellow-bellied sapsucker. Rebuttal resulted and the bald eagle was determined as middle ground. This is our tribute to our nation’s forefathers and their beloved and hairy primate friend. Not to mention, our newly established independence.

We named our company in memory of the actual Gorilla – Stanley Stubbertanks – who raised Jon and his brother Mogli on the banks of the Mighty Missisip. Stubbertanks passed sadly, but peacefully, at the tender age of 76.

Check that. We were first driven (and still are) by coming up with the non-traditional vehicle of communicating a message, or guerilla marketing. Guerilla seemed too obvious, plus the strength and boldness of the Gorilla was something that inspired us – hence “Gorilla” as our name. As for the number, well, we first came up with this idea in July of 2006.

Back in ’76, while taking a holiday in Tanzania, Joe and Jon rescued a baby gorilla being attacked by a family of rabid mongeese. It was quite the adventure and the story brought us global notoriety for nine days.

Scratch that. “Gorilla” is actually a nod to the non-traditional, guerilla work we love to do. The 76? We first started in July of 2006.

Joe, once a valiant warrior, served a tour of duty on the fields of Rohan. It was there that he fought heroically, defeating a militia of orcs and urukai which sort of look like Gorillas. A plethora of these gorilla look-alikes (76 to be exact) fell to Joe’s remarkable swordplay, and a man by the name of Frodo Baggins climbed his way to Mount Doom. There, he cast the ring of power into the fiery chasm from whence it came, destroying the evil Lord Sauron forever. Ummm…
